It seems like the word respect is lacking it's meaning in today's society.
When one thinks of respect, it's more of gaining respect from others than giving respect in return. Why is that?
Through some observation, it would seem that some respect is given when threatened with fear and violence. Though it shows it that way in movies, it also comes true in reality. Another way of gaining respect would be the position an individual is in. Family, work, relationship, etc...
They all seem to have the get-respect-more-than-give-respect type of deal going on.
Personally, I would have to say that it would deal with how much respect we have towards ourselves. From that, people feed off of it. Then again, it can also be the attitude given towards one another.
Having lack of respect for our own well being gives off the wrong message that people are able and allowed to take advantage of us. Because we are afraid to give ourselves respect, we look for it for others. But sometimes I wonder, due to the fact that we lack self respect we tend to believe that how others' treat us is how it's supposed to be and that's the amount of respect we are supposed to have?
Respecting yourself is learning to love who you truly are.
In addition, it is not best to be cocky and rude about gaining respect from others because you love yourself. That's already called bullying.
It's always a two-way street with everything.
If you can't give respect, don't expect it back.
As harsh as it may seem, we need to look into ourselves to see if we deserve the amount we want.
What is that golden rule everyone talks about?
Treat others how YOU want to be treated.
